The Holy Qidase is the heart of our spiritual life. In the Divine Liturgy, heaven and earth meet, and the Faithful Partake of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The holy Eucharist is not symbolic; it is the true and life-giving Mystery given for the salvation of the world.

The faithful prepare through prayer, fasting, and confession.

“Take, eat; this is my Body.” Matthew 26:26

In accordance with such writings of the Holy Scriptures, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church baptizes male infants at the age of 40 days and female infants at the age of 80 days, (Lev. 12:2-7). Yet if an infant is sick, so that the infant may not die before being baptized and be subjected to the unchangeable order of the Lord Jesus Christ, “unless one is born of water and the spirit he can not enter the kingdom of God”, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church baptizes infants just as they come even prior to the above fixed baptismal dates. In addition, if an adult believes and requests baptism, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church willingly complies and baptizes him or her. 

Holy Communion is the culmination of all sacraments of the Church. Holy Communion means offering of sacrifice. This is not an offering of man to God, but the offering of God for man. The sheep and goats were offered as sacrifices in the altars during the times of the Old Testament. These were examples preceding the offering of the flesh and blood of Christ during the New Testament. The offering of bread and cup of grace that Melchizedek offered to Abraham (Gen. 14:18) and the sacrifices that the Israelites offered during the day of their liberation exemplify Christ our Pascal lamb. Holy Communion has Biblical foundation (Mt. 26:26; 1Cor. 11:23-25). When the priest puts the bread on the paten and the wine in the chalice and conducts liturgical prayer, the bread is changed into the body of the Son of God and the wine into the blood of the Son of God. What is thus given in our Church is the body and blood of the Son of God.

Though man was created in the image and honor of the Creator, through sin the sentence of bodily death came upon him. As it is written: “For dust you are, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19).

The Church offers the Prayer of Absolution for the departed, beseeching God that they may obtain mercy and remission before His throne. Saint Paul prayed for Onesiphorus, saying, “May the Lord grant him mercy on that Day” (2 Timothy 1:18). This demonstrates that prayer for the departed has apostolic foundation.

The Book of Sirach likewise declares: “The dead is at rest; yet make remembrance for him” (Sirach 38:23)

Memorial service/Fithaht /is the intercessory prayer offered for the repose of the soul. It includes commemoration within the Divine Liturgy, offering of the Holy Eucharistic Sacrifice, chanting of the Psalms, incense and candles, and almsgiving to the poor. The memorial is centered upon the Sacrifice of Christ, not upon social feasting.

These days reflect apostolic and patristics tradition concerning the soul’s journey and the church’s intercessory remembrance.

Christian marriage is one of the seven sacraments, which is performed in a church by means of which the grace of the Holy Spirit is obtained. Holy Matrimony is based on the Bible (Gen. 1:27, 28,2:18; Mt. 19:4-6).

Classes are held every Sunday following the Divine Liturgy (Kidase) and children are grouped according to their ages:

    •    Ages 6–12

    •    Ages 12 and above

These classes focus only on Bible study

Our Zoom sessions are held every Friday and focus on church traditions, teachings, and rules.

Our youth program is created to help children of all ages to better understand and to appreciate the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church faith.
